Minnesota Timberwolves top point guard Ricky Rubio will be out seven to eight weeks due to a high ankle sprain. The unfortunate injury happened during the Timberwolves’ 112-103 overtime loss to the Orlando Magic last Friday.

X-rays take after the game showed no fracture according to initial reports from startribune.com but Rubio was held on crutches and the ankle wrapped via the same post-game report. Initial diagnosis was at least for two weeks but follow-up evaluation on Saturday stated that the Spanish point guard will now be out up to two months as per USA Today Sports’ anonymous source.

Rubio penetrated to the basket with more than two minutes to go in the second quarter in the game against the Magic when he landed awkwardly on the ankle. Rubio finished 4 points and 6 assists in just 13 minutes against Orlando and the Timberwolves also lost to the Miami Heat the following day, 102-92. Minnesota dropped their fourth game so far in the season and carry a 2-4 win-loss record in the early part of the 2014-2015 NBA season.

“Rubio, who will wear a walking boot for the next two weeks, suffered no serious ligament or tendon damage, according to the MRI, and the injury is not classified as a high-ankle sprain,” the unnamed source said to USA Today Sports

Rubio was signed to a 4-year $55 million contract extension before the season started and the injury is sen as a big blow for a rebuilding team like the Timberwolves both in the short term and long term. Without Rubio, the Timberwolves are left with veteran Mo Williams and rookie Zach LaVine as the point guard options for the squad.

Rubio, who averages 9.4 points and 10.0 assists for the year, was hopeful that he will return from the injury healthy and shared his thoughts on social media Twitter:
