US presidential hopeful Donald Trump has once again stirred up controversy. He earlier said that the US should take the example of the UK as to what could happen if the Muslims are not banned from entering the country. The comment has led over 300,000 Britons to sign a petition to ban Trump from entering the UK.

Following the California shooting that killed 14 people last week, Trump called for the closing down of the US borders to all Muslims across the world until the authorities are able to figure out the nature of the threat. He justified his statement by considering the UK as an example. Trump said that some parts of London are so radicalised that even the police are afraid of going there.

The comments spurred rage across the country and more than 300,000 people signed the petition. The issue will be debated in parliament, which is a norm in the UK for any petition that reaches 100,000 signatures.

"The UK has banned entry to many individuals for hate speech. The same principles should apply to everyone who wishes to enter the UK," the Parliament’s e-petition said.

Trump’s comments on Muslims have not only disenchanted his image to Britons but have also caused Israelis to call on their government to ban the Republican frontrunner from their country. Trump’s statements have started affecting the sale of products under his real estate brand in the Middle East.

Following the overwhelming outrage against Trump in the UK, a Scottish University has even revoked his honorary degree.

"I think he's betraying a quite stupefying ignorance that makes him frankly unfit to hold the office of president of the United States," London Mayor Boris Johnson said when a reporter asked him what he thought of Trump’s comments. "Crime has been falling steadily both in London and in New York -- the only reason I wouldn't go to some parts of New York is the real risk of meeting Donald Trump."

In the US, Mayor Rick Kriseman of St. Petersburg, Florida, said in a tweet on Monday that he is barring Trump from entering the city, saying that it is his ridiculous reply to Trump’s “ridiculousness.”
