The Kansas City Chiefs are looking to retain the service of Alex Smith, but hope the quarterback would agree to the terms of the contract extension, a source close to situation reported on Tuesday.

Chiefs head coach confirmed the team's front office, led by general manager John Dorsey, would not allow Smith to hit free-agency at the end of the upcoming season.

"Well, there's open communication between both parties. Now, I'm not in that business anymore -- that's (general manager) John Dorsey's side of it -- but there's been open communication," Reid said in an interview with NFL AM on Tuesday.

"I've always believed that if there's open communication, then normally good things happen. So, I'm sure something will get done. I can't put a time frame on that, but I'm sure something will get done."

Smith, who covered 3,313 yards with 23 touchdowns and seven interceptions last season, is reportedly looking to strike a lucrative deal, but the Chiefs are not keen on giving him a massive contract similar to Peyton Manning and Tom Brady's paychecks.

"Eventually, as (with) all negotiations, there will be a medium point where both sides agree. Time will move on and we'll go to the next project," Dorsey said. "This thing will go on for a little bit. There's a degree of patience here. There's no reason to rush."

Despite drafting Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Aaron Murray, the Chiefs are expected to exert their efforts in an attempt to re-sign their starting signal-caller.
