Early results reveal the National League for Democracy party, led by Nobel Peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, has claimed almost 90 percent of the seats in Myanmar.

According to the National Election Commission, Suu Kyi’s party has won 163 of the 182 seats declared so far in the Myanmar parliament Pyidaungsu Hluttaw. Officials say Suu Kyi has won her seat as well. This is believed to be the most democratic election in the country in 25 years.

While the constitution does not allow Suu Kyi to become the president, she said it would not stop her from “making all the decision.” She told the BBC on Tuesday, while there are some irregularities, the polls this time were “largely free.”

NLD supporters are seen in jubilant mood outside the party’s Yangon headquarters as the party gradually moves towards a landslide victory. People were wearing T-shirts with Suu Kyi’s image.

Last time Suu Kyi’s party participated in an election was in 1990. While she was believed to have won the election, the military rulers put her under arrest and annulled the results. The legendary leader was under house arrest for the next two decades while she was globally recognised a symbol of democracy.

President Thein Sein, the leader of the present military rule in the country, has said he will respect the election results. However, the military will appoint a quarter of all lawmakers in both houses of the parliament. The move aims to keep the system in favour of the military, the CNN reported.

"We believe we can win," NLD supporter Ayea Nyeian Thu said. "We don't want to see a military government any longer."
