Aircraft engineers at Qantas plan a one-hour work stoppage on Friday that will launch what they intend to be a series of industrial actions against the airline.

The engineers said Monday that negotiations with Qantas on pay and job security have hit a snag. They said the negotiations have been going on for six months now.

Qantas said "minor delays" can be expected by travelers on that day. The airline said it was "extremely disappointed" that ALAEA had "abruptly halted" the discussions.

The engineers, belonging to the Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers Association (ALAEA), decided to stage the Friday walkout after a meeting with Qantas management Monday.

Apart from the pay and job security issues, the engineers expressed concern over the airline's plan to outsource maintenance work overseas, as well as a reduction in regular maintenance checks for Qantas flights, according to reports quoting ALAEA federal secretary Steve Purvinas.

No further details about the negotiations were immediately disclosed.
