Grupo Vidanta’s Success Is Proof That Collaboration Builds the Best Businesses

Iván Chávez has been navigating Grupo Vidanta’s real estate endeavors since 2007, when he took over the helm from his father, the company’s founder, Daniel Chávez Morán. Prior to this, Iván Chávez worked as a financial analyst at Credit Suisse in New York City and Eurohypo AG, after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business with a Bachelor of Science in Economics and a double major in Entrepreneurship and Real Estate Development.
Since then, the thirty-three-year-old Executive Vice President has been effectively running the company, which has 17,000 employees and a reputation as one of the “Best Places to Work” in Mexico for the last eight years.
Perhaps one of the secrets to Chávez’s success as an employer and a business leader is his ability to initiate professional relationships across a wide range of disciplines. These include projects in aviation, construction, entertainment, and recreation, as well as in his primary fields of real estate and travel.
One of Chávez’s first collaborations was with the Jack Nicklaus Academy of Golf, which led to a pro-level golf course and training facility at Vidanta Nuevo Vallarta in 2012. During his career, Jack Nicklaus won eighteen major golf tournaments between 1962 and 1986, including three British Opens, four US Opens, five PGA Championships, and six Masters. His golfing philosophy is now taught at nine licensed Nicklaus Academies worldwide – including Brazil, China, Mexico, Spain, and the US – with a tenth training facility opening in India in 2018. His turnkey solution combines a comprehensive, customized, and certified curriculum with a state-of-the-art proprietary analysis system.
The Nicklaus Academy and practice facility on The Nayar Course at Vidanta Nuevo Vallarta features the same expert amenities set against the stunning backdrop of the Sierra Madres. The Nicklaus courses at Vidanta Nuevo Vallarta, Vidanta Rivera Maya, and Vidanta Puerto Peñasco are just three examples of the luxuries that have earned the resorts Three, Four, and Five Diamond Awards from the American Automobile Association (AAA).
In 2013, Chávez’s avid interest in the arts led him to a successful collaboration with Cirque du Soleil. Headquartered in Montreal, the world-renowned performing arts company is applauded for its electrifying reinvention of a traditional circus. In 1993, Mystère became the first Cirque du Soleil production to be performed in a custom-built theater. The company’s itinerary currently includes nineteen productions, including seven permanent/resident installations in Las Vegas and one in Riviera Maya, with two new shows set to hit the road soon. Showing exclusively in the Cirque du Soleil Theater at Vidanta Riviera Maya, JOYÀ is the first and only Cirque du Soleil spectacle in Mexico. Spellbound audiences are treated to a sumptuous array of whimsically crafted cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, main dishes, and desserts as they watch the magical story of an alchemist and his granddaughter unfold.
By mutual consent, the theater was constructed in 2013 with respect for the environment, per Cirque du Soleil’s and Grupo Vidanta’s sustainability policies, in the same way that the show was designed to celebrate the site’s history and culture. The performance premiered to rave reviews in 2014 and has been captivating audiences ever since.
Following the stunning success of JOYÀ, Chávez and Cirque du Soleil decided to extend their partnership with an even more ambitious project called The Parks. Located at Vidanta Nuevo Vallarta, The Parks will be a series of immersive, interactive “wonderlands,” complete with rides, attractions, performances, restaurants, a full-service spa, and on-site accommodations for ease of access called The Cascades and Kingdom of the Sun.
On February 22, 2018, the Los Cabos Ultimate Entertainment District opened with a splash at Vidanta Los Cabos. The venue was a partnership between Chávez and the Hakkasan Group, which specializes in luxury nightlife and boutique dining experiences. Particularly designed to appeal to “spring breakers” and other young adults, the hip arts district features an OMNIA Dayclub, a SHOREbar, a Herringbone restaurant, and a niche Día de los Muertos themed dining experience called Casa Calavera. The opening lineup featured appearances by internationally acclaimed DJs Zedd, Steve Aoki, and Calvin Harris.
Chávez’s business acumen and well-rounded interests have enabled him to build successful interdisciplinary relationships with an ever-increasing network of industry leaders and entrepreneurs. To have accomplished so much in the last decade bodes well for Grupo Vidanta’s future partnerships.
