After a Super Bowl appearance, the San Francisco 49ers were expected to once again romp through the regular season and be one of the top contenders for the championship. But after three weeks of play, it appears that they might even struggle to get into the post-season if they play like they have the past two games.

On Thursday, the 49ers will visit the St. Louis Rams, who’s also coming from back-to-back losses but have beaten San Francisco the last time they met.

The 49ers won against the Green Bay Packers, 34-28 in Week 1 but lost their next two games via surprisingly big margins. Seattle embarrassed them in Week 2 to the tune of 29-3 and then Indianapolis pulled off the upset in San Francisco with a final score of 27-7.

The constant in both losses was the struggles of San Francisco’s leader Colin Kaepernick who had a 12.9 total quarterback rating over the last two weeks, the worst in the league in that period.

In the Packers game, the 3-year pro threw for 412 yards and had 3 touchdowns. Then in the next two, he had combined totals of 277 passing yards with no TDs and 4 interceptions. Also to blame is San Francisco’s defense who has given up 28.0 points per game—7th worst overall in the NFL.

Meanwhile, St. Louis pulled off a comeback win over the Arizona Cardinals in their season opener only to lose the next two on the road against the Atlanta Falcons and Dallas Cowboys.

The Rams were down 11 points at the start of the 4th quarter against Arizona but scored the final 14 points of the game. They tried another comeback in the game, cutting down the lead to a touchdown after trailing by 21 points but fell short.

In the 2012 match-up, the Rams defeated their NFC West rivals in a low-scoring affair, 16-13, in overtime. St. Louis’s defense was the key for that game as they forced Kaepernick for a safety at the end zone and then recovered a Kaepernick fumble late in the fourth to get the TD and force overtime.
