France conducted a series of anti-terror raids across the region amid building fear and threat of potential terrorist sleeper cells. Police identified Ahmed Almuhamed as a new suspect, but the matter in which his identity surfaced still intrigues French investigators.

French investigators remain suspicious of the Syrian passport found near the remains of one of the suicide bombers in the Paris attacks. According to the police, it was intriguing to see that the passport was readily available at the scene.

“It was not actually on the terrorist’s body, or what remained of it. It was lying nearby, as if meant to be found.” The Independent cited a French official source. According to the passport, the holder's name is Ahmed Almuhamed, aged 25. Records indicate that he entered the European Union together with 69 other refugees after their vessel sank last Oct. 3.

The thought that a Syrian refugee turned out to be suicide bomber has been spun in different ways by politicians and right-wing newspapers. This raises concerns whether the Islamic State successfully entered countries through the refugee influx across countries.

French officials were quick to clarify that there is no proof yet that Almuhamed was one of the three Stade de France suicide bombers. The passport may not hold ground yet. Intelligence sources claims that the legitimacy of the passport is still in question considering that document number and name does not match the picture.

“One of the suspected terrorists, AA, who is of interest to the French security agencies, was registered on the Presevo border crossing on Oct. 7 this year, where he formally sought asylum,” said the Serbian interior ministry in a statement.

“Checks have confirmed that his details match those of the person who on Oct. 3 was identified in Greece. There was no Interpol warrant issued against this person.” The identity of Almuhamed is subject to further investigation.
