Bouncing back from a shock Game One loss at Fenway Park, giving the home advantage to the Detroit Tigers, the Boston Red Sox won Game Five of their 2013 American League Championship Series in Detroit on Friday (Australia time), 4-3, giving them a 3-2 advantage to take back home to Boston.

The Red Sox started the game on fire, hitting three runs in the second inning. Mike Napoli, who had a home run in Game Three, fired a 460-foot fly ball to center field that landed among the bushes. Napoli's home run was the tinder to the Red Sox's second-inning rally and let them realise that Tigers starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez was not at the top of his game. Jonny Gomes and David Ross provided two more RBIs in that same inning, one of which hit the wall.

By the time Napoli had capitalised on a wild pitch in the third inning, putting the Red Sox up 4-0, the crowd at Comerica Park fell silent.

Then Detroit started a run of their own.

Over the next three innings, Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester allowed a run courtesy of Miguel Cabrera, who atoned for a crucial second-inning mistake, and Brayan Pena hit a Junichi Tazawa pitch to narrow the gap to 4-2. Cabrera again hit a single for Jose Iglesias to make it a one-run game.

Unfortunately for the Tigers, that was all they had left as the Red Sox pumped eleven straight outs in the last three innings, including a huge five-out save courtesy of Koji Uehara, to finish the game and leave the Detroit crowd wondering if they had seen the last of their team at home.

The series travels back to Boston for Games Six and Seven, if needed. Game One loss aside, the Red Sox have a whopping 53-28 home record in the regular season. The Tigers are not bad playing away games at 42-39, but it's clear that the momentum has shifted Boston's way yet again.
