“Gone Girl” actor Ben Affleck, 42, delivered an emotional speech when he accepted the Favorite Humanitarian Award at the 41st Annual People's Choice Awards held at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Jan. 7, Wednesday.

For Affleck’s friend and “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” co-star Amy Adams, who presented the award, Affleck “puts his heart and soul into everything he does” and what make him a great humanitarian are the same phenomenal qualities he has as a director, actor and writer.

In his acceptance speech, Affleck said he has been called many things in his life but he is not sure until recently that humanitarian has ever been one of them. He added that he has been fortunate to work along with numerous people in Congo and from all around the world who are “far more deserving.”

The Favorite Humanitarian Award was given to Affleck for his work in the ongoing crisis in the Eastern Congo where violence and disease have killed more than five million people. He founded the advocacy and grant-making initiative called Eastern Congo Initiative (ECI) that is “wholly focused on working with and for the people of eastern Congo,”

Affleck also explained how important philanthropy is for him with his aim to “leave behind a record of someone who did more than just gobble up stuff for himself.” Watch the emotional acceptance speech of the 2015 People’s Choice Awards’ Favorite Humanitarian awardee here:
