The New York Giants have found their new general manager in Buffalo Bills assistant GM Joe Schoen. It’s only increased speculation Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll will be New York’s next head coach.

The Giants announced Friday that they hired Schoen, who spent the last five seasons as Buffalo’s assistant general manager. Daboll has been Buffalo’s offensive coordinator since 2018, and he’s likely in his final year with the team.

"We are pleased and proud to name Joe as our general manager," Giants president John Mara said in a statement. "Throughout our search, Joe impressed us with his ability to communicate a progressive and comprehensive vision for our team. His philosophy and collaborative approach to building a roster and coaching staff align with what we were looking for in a general manager."

Daboll is one of the top head coaching candidates in the NFL. The 46-year-old has already been interviewed for openings with the Chicago Bears and Miami Dolphins.

New York is expected to interview Daboll, now that it has a GM in place. Dave Gettleman retired as the Giants GM at the end of the regular season, following a disastrous four-year run with the organization. The Giants fired head coach Joe Judge after going 10-23 in two seasons.

When the Giants created a vacancy at head coach, Daboll became the betting favorite to fill the opening. With Schoen in the fold, Daboll has the best chance to be the Giants head coach, sources have told The New York Post.

Brian Flores might be Daboll’s biggest competition for the job. Flores was surprisingly fired by the Dolphins on the heels of two winning seasons as their head coach. Flores is also a top candidate in Chicago and is expected to land somewhere for the 2022 season.

Daboll will be in Kansas City Sunday for the Bills’ divisional-round playoff game. Buffalo scored a league-high 47 points on Wild-Card Weekend.

In each of the last two seasons, Buffalo has been a top-three scoring team in the NFL. Josh Allen has turned into one of the league’s best quarterbacks while being coached by Daboll and head coach Sean McDermott.

The Giants have the NFL’s worst record since the start of the 2017 season. In the last two years, no team has scored fewer points or averaged fewer yards per play than New York.
