"The Blacklist" is back on Monday night, with its bag-full of mysteries. The Season 1 opened with the surrender of Red to FBI and it wrapped up after solving the mystery why the most wanted man on FBI's list surrendered. It was to force his unknown enemy, Berlin, to come out of his den and reveal himself. However, the mystery surrounding Liz and Red's relationship is at the core of this show. Is Red Liz's father? The viewers are unlikely to get an answer to that question soon.

Speaking about Liz's father, James Spader, who plays Red, said to Variety: "Elizabeth Keen has spoken of a memory of being in a fire when she was a child, and somebody pulled her out of that fire. She may be assuming that it's her father, but we've never said whether it's her father or not."

The final moments of "The Blacklist" Season 1 finale revealed that Red has scar-marks on his back, possibly from a fire incident. A dying Tom whispered in Liz's ear that her father is alive. Red told Liz that if she comes to know about her father's identity, her life would be in grave danger. This whole Liz's father story is a convoluted, zigzag puzzle.

"Whether or not he is her father, we look at it as a father-daughter story," Jon Bokenkamp, creator of the show, said to TV Line. "[This season we] have Liz in a darker space, which I think she will have earned given all that she's had happen to her in her life." He also said that Red will be acting like "Liz's surrogate parent" and will be seen "trying to counsel her out of a dark space."

The premiere episode of "The Blacklist" is titled "Lord Baltimore." In the episode, Berlin will continue to pose a threat to Red and the people he care about. Berlin believes that Red killed her daughter and sent him her body piece by piece. In the Season 2 trailer, Berlin is seen saying, "Mr Remington, I presume. I'm going to do to her what you did to my daughter. "Send her back to you, piece by piece ... by piece." It is likely that Berlin is talking about Liz. Berlin's story-arc may throw more light on Red's past, which seems more twisted than Liz's father mystery.

The opening episode of "The Blacklist" Season 2 will see Red and Liz teaming up again to take down Berlin.
