Unsettled Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira reportedly favours joining Arsenal over Chelsea, according to sources.

The 27-year-old is strongly linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in January to reunite with former mentor Jose Mourinho.

However, the emergence of Nemanja Matic as a very dependable holding man, while the likes of Ramires and John Obi Mikel waiting for each of their turns, the German international is better off in north London, where there is a scarcity of personnel in his position.

Mikel Arteta may have recovered from his recent calf injury, but record suggests that he might be sidelined yet again in the near future and Mathieu Flamini will need to rest his 30-year-old legs from time to time.

The Gunners might be looking at a bargain for such a quality player, as Khedira's contract is set to run out at the end of the season, while recently undergoing a surgical repair to his troubled knee.

Meanwhile, Arsenal legend Robert Pires believes that there is great probability that Arsene Wenger can secure the services of the former Stuttgart man, whom he dubbed to be the next Patrick Vieira.

"He reminds me of Patrick Vieira, maybe they have an opportunity with Khedira," he told the Daily Telegraph.

"It is likely in the January window. He played very well with Germany."

"My advice is if he can buy Khedira he can be the [new] Vieira, more aggression in the middle."

"He has a lot of experience. When you play in the middle you need experience, especially when your midfield is young like Arsenal's."
