The San Francisco 49ers and New Orleans Saints are both carrying .500 records (4-4) entering their Week 10 match-up in the National Football League (NFL) on Sunday. A loss for either team will be crucial in their postseason hopes halfway into the regular season.

The Saints will have the momentum before the kick-off winning two straight blowouts against the Green Bay Packers, 44-23 and Carolina Panthers, 28-10 in the previous two games. The opposite is true for the 49ers who has fallen via a huge margin to the Denver Broncos, 42-17 and then a tough close one versus the St. Louis Rams, 13-10 in the last two.

Although they have the same win-loss record, New Orleans is in better position in the team standings too. The Saints are atop the weak NFC South division ahead a game of the Carolina Panthers (3-5) while the 49ers are a game back the Seattle Seahawks (5-3) and third place overall in the tougher NFC West led by the Arizona Cardinals (7-1). New Orleans are a perfect 3-0 at home while San Francisco is an even 2-2 on the road in 2014.

New Orleans snapped a seven-game road losing streak to the Panthers last week behind Drew Brees (297 passing years, 23-of-34 completions with 1 touchdown) and its balanced passing game. Six players had 25 receiving yards led by Jimmy Graham’s 83 yards (7 receptions) and Kenny Still’s 72 yards (5 receptions). Mark Ingram took care of the Saints’ ground game with 100 rushing yards on 30 carries.

San Francisco meanwhile had the victory over the Rams if not for a Colin Kaepernick fumble at the goal line with two seconds left in the game. Kaepernick finished a total of 251 yards but was sacked eight times— a career-high for the star quarterback.

The last time these teams met was Nov. 17, 2013 when the Saints won by a field goal, 23-20. The 49ers want to avoid a repeat of that loss and want to contain Brees and the Saints’ passing game which is third overall in the league at 307.0 yards per game. San Francisco is the third best team in giving up passing yardage allowing just 206.3 passing yards per game.
