New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter was not lined up in Yankees' Sunday rivalry game against the Boston Red Sox, and the Yankees are not sure about when the perennial All-Star will be back.

Jeter, who has played only 17 games so far, reinjured his left ankle, which was surgically repaired after being fractured twice in the past year.

"His ankle is a little sore, so we are probably going to give him a couple of days and make an evaluation," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. He was encouraged, though, by the results of a CT scan performed on Jeter's ankle, which showed no signs of a fracture.

With only 20 days before the playoffs, Girardi is not sure if Jeter will get to play again in the 2013 season. However, the Yankees are not planning to put Jeter in the freezer despite the latest string of injuries. They had noticed Jeter was not running the right way, but he never complained about any pain.

Jeter started the 2013 on the injured list as he was not able to recover for Opening Day. The shortstop suffered a fractured ankle during Game 1 of the 2012 American League championship CS. Jeter returned in July, but had to withdraw again after one game after injuring his quadriceps muscle. He made another return in August and has been able to play until Sunday. Eduardo Nunez, who is batting .256 on the season, started at shortstop on Sunday in lieu of Jeter.

"This [year] is probably his worst one ever for him -- to have to live through this. This is the time where he probably likes being out there more than any, and it has been difficult," Girardi said.

New York was 2 1/2 games down in the race to the final AL wild card spot with just 20 games left in the regular season.

Jeter, for his part, has avoided talking to media. Girardi, though, made sure to talk to him prior to Sunday's game.

"I know he's frustrated, and he wants to be out there. It's tearing him up inside," Girardi said, referring to Jeter's injury-riddle season. He added that it's been "weird" to fill out lineup cards without Jeter's name on it, saying that 2013 has been the worst year that Jeter has ever had.
