There is a strong possibility that Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Miguel Cotto will have a rematch after their November clash reportedly generated one of the biggest gate sales in the history of sporting events in Nevada.

According to Dan Rafael of ESPN, Cotto-Canelo generated a live gate of $12,470,200 ( AU$17346238.99) from 10,198 tickets sold as stated by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. The report also indicated that it ranks as the 13th biggest gate in Nevada history, behind Bernard Hopkins vs Oscar De La Hoya in 2004, and ahead of Floyd Mayweather vs Cotto in 2012.

The fight also brought in 900,000 PPV buys, according to HBO’s Mark Taffet, which is far from the 150,000 PPV buys Alvarez’s mandatory challenger Gennady Golovkin generated in October against David Lemieux. According to Boxing News 24’s Dan Ambrose, the earnings posted by the Cotto-Canelo fight could push Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya to consider a rematch between the two middleweights.

“If Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya was looking for a reason to push a rematch between his golden goose Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) and Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) onto the boxing public, I think he may have found a reason,” Ambrose wrote. “The figures released for the fight probably has De La Hoya licking his chops at the idea of putting together a Canelo-Cotto rematch.”

Alvarez was given an extension by the WBC to negotiate with Golovkin for the former’s mandatory title defense. But according to Boxing Scene, a potential Canelo-Golovkin fight may have to wait until September, with “GGG” probable for a bout in March. This opens up an opportunity for Alvarez to fight Cotto in May, when the former plans to return.

Alvarez won against Cotto via unanimous decision last month in Las Vegas but some of the boxing fans think the scorecards should not be as wide as what the three judges scored. A second installment of Cotto-Canelo would certainly entice boxing fans to watch, which could mean another huge live gate numbers.
