Chris Algieri from the United States attends a news conference at Venetian Macao in Macau August 25, 2014. Algieri will fight for the WBO welterweight title against Manny Pacquiao from the Philippines, at the Venetian's Cotai Arena in Macau on November 22, 2014. Reuters

Fame and a higher guaranteed purse has its price, and for undefeated American boxer Chris Algieri, the price is his World Boxing Organisation (WBO) junior welterweight title he won from Ruslan Provodnikov.

WBO forced Algieri to vacate the title because of his Nov 22 bout against Filipino champ Manny Pacquiao at the Cotai Arena in Macau for the WBO welterweight title. Boxingnews24 quotes ESPN's Dan Rafael on Monday as the source of the news that the WBO made Algieri give up the title.

However, badlefthook found the decision controversial because in circumstances similar to what Algieri is facing, the boxer is usually given by the sanctioning organisation time to decide which of his belts he would retain in the event that he would beat Pacquiao and win the featherweight title. The portal noted that Algieri was not even given the opportunity to defend his junior welterweight belt.

Boxingnews24 pointed out that even if Algieri would lose to Pacquiao, as many boxing fans expect, he would still have "enough cache" for another major bout for another world title at 140. But that is premised on Algieri not being badly beaten by the Filipino legislator.

One possible match for Algieri after Nov 22, and premised on him losing to Pacquiao, would be Jessie Vargas, holder of the WBA light welterweight crown. Bob Arum, Top Rank Promotions boss and who manages Vargas, would likely even push for an Algieri-Vargas match because it could boost Vargas's popularity and open the door for a bout versus Pacquiao.

In 2010, Pacquiao was in a similar situation. At that time, he held the WBO welterweight crown he won in November 2009 from Miguel Cotto, which he successfully defended against Joshua Clottey in March 2010.

He then moved up the junior middleweight class by fighting Antonio Margarito in November the same year. While the Pacquiao-Margarito bout was contested at the 150-pound catchweight with the vacant WBC title at stake, when Pacquiao won the fight, we wasn't asked to vacate the title, while he defended his WBO welterweight title in 2011.

Badlefthook thinks the difference between how Algieri was treated compared to Pacquiao has to do with the money that Pacquiao's fights generates.

And if Pacquiao wins and decides to move back to the junior welterweight division, he won't likely be facing Algieri again for the vacant WBO title in that weight class.
