A 32-second video titled “Penn State Gets Free Basket After Missed FT” has gone viral. It has reached more than 700,000 views since it was posted on YouTube on Dec. 3.

The video features a part of the ACC-Big Ten matchup played at the BJC when Penn State Nittany Lions struggled to start up as the Virginia Tech Hokies put pressure on DJ Newbill in the opening 20 minutes. The game started out with both teams missing shots early.

In the first half of the game against Virginia Tech, Penn State’s forward Payton Banks was fouled late. It was the ninth foul of Virginia Tech if the half, which meant Banks would go to the line for a one-and-one.

It seems like each player except Penn State’s Shep Garner thought that his team was in the double bonus since he was the only player on the court who moved after Banks’ missed free throws, which led to an easy two points for Penn State.

After driving in for the uncontested layup, Garner appears to be unsure whether his basket counted as he goes back to get in position for Banks’ second free-throw attempt.

Although Penn State had missed free throws and Virginia Tech made shots, Virginia Tech gave up their eight-point margin regardless of a final second three-point shot, which would have tied the game at the buzzer. This means Virginia Tech never actually took the lead after.

In the end, Penn State managed to beat Virginia Tech 61-58. Watch the viral “Penn State Gets Free Basket After Missed FT” video here:
