Ultimate Fighting Championship, or UFC, reigning featherweight champion Jose Aldo is teasing for a huge announcement after his bout with top contender Conor McGregor at UFC 189. The current champ who has run up a string of 9 consecutive title defences is hinting at moving up in weight class, once he disposes of his latest adversary.

“One step at a time,” Aldo recently told Sherdog.com during his training session in Brazil.” I have a tough fight with McGregor, and that´s my goal now. After that fight, you will know what is gonna happen. The UFC knows, I know, and everything is already set.”

Aldo, who is currently holding the title for five years now, is set to take on the biggest challenge of his career when he faces off with McGregor, the brash and trash-talking Irishman who has vowed to take the belt from the established Brazilian. McGregor is so sure of a victory that he has recently referred to the 145-lbs. weight class as the “McGregor Division,” despite the belt still belonging to the 28-year-old Aldo.

Nevertheless, Aldo is unfazed by the antics of McGregor and even called his rival a court jester, while referring to himself as the king of court. Still, it is impossible that his comments which come off as confident that that he will easily beat McGregor will not be taken sitting down by ”The Notorious One.”

The move in weight class that the native of Manaus, Brazil must be referring to is the jump to lightweight against current champion Anthony Pettis. UFC President Dana White entertained the idea of a super fight between Pettis and Aldo in 2014 but the match never came into fruition. Despite this, fan interest in the prospect has never wavered. If Aldo follows through with his plan to conquer McGregor, it is likely that he has wiped his current weight class clean and there is no other option but to go higher.

Still, any possibility of a fight at 155-lbs. with Pettis still hangs up in the air as the current champion still has his hands full in trying to fend off Rafael dos Anjos. Aldo has all but backed his fellow Brazilian in saying that dos Anjos is equipped with all the physical tools to bring home a belt to their country in the division.
