Liverpool defender Daniel Agger has left Anfield after spending more than eight years at Merseyside.

The 29-year-old Denmark international will head back to his boyhood club Brondby, which competes in the Danish Superliga.

"Liverpool have been such a big part of my life that leaving is extremely difficult," said Agger.

"The opportunity arose for me to return home and at this stage of my career it felt like the right decision for me."

The move reportedly cost the Danish outfit about £4million.

Agger's first-team participation declined last season, making only 16 starts, while spending a considerable amount of time on the bench.

Meanwhile, Reds boss Brendan Rodgers took time to thank one of the longest-serving centre-backs for his contributions to the club.

"On behalf of everyone at Liverpool, I thank Daniel for his service to the club and hope he finishes his career with some happy times in Denmark," said Rodgers.
