Peterson, a marquee National Football League running back facing charges of child abuse for injuries he caused when disciplining his son, was reinstated by the Minnesota Vikings on Monday. Reuters

A few days after being re-instated by the Minnesota Vikings, another child abuse allegation was hurled against Adrian Peterson. The development left the National Football League (NFL) franchise with no choice but to indefinitely suspend the star running back.

“This has been an ongoing and deliberate process since last Friday’s news. In conversations with the NFL over the last two days, the Vikings advised the League of the team’s decision to revisit the situation regarding Adrian Peterson,” the Vikings official press release stated.

“In response, the League informed the team of the option to place Adrian on the Exempt/Commissioner’s Permission list, which will require that Adrian remain away from all team activities while allowing him to take care of his personal situation until the legal proceedings are resolved. After giving the situation additional thought, we have decided this is the appropriate course of action for the organization and for Adrian.”

The decision is a big blow to Peterson, who claimed that he was just disciplining his children on both child abuse accusations.

On the field, the Vikings will also feel the effect of the absence of Peterson, who lead the team in rushing yards, 90.4 per game in the 2013-2014 season. His 1266 rushing yards ranked fifth overall among all running backs in the league last season. The 29-year-old Peterson is a six-time Pro Bowler making the team in consecutive years from 2007 to 2013 and led the league in rushing yards in 2008 and 2012.

"Adrian emphasized his desire to avoid further distraction to his teammates and coaches while focusing on his current situation; this resolution accomplishes these objectives as well," the statement also said.

In a related story, the popular sports brand, Nike has suspended its endorsement deal with Peterson in light of the criminal charges.

“Nike in no way condones child abuse or domestic violence of any kind and has shared our concerns with the NFL,” Nike said in a another press release. "We have suspended our contract with Adrian Peterson."

Initially, two days after the reinstatement, the team said that Peterson will be suiting up in Week 3 against the New Orleans Saints. That plan is shelved now as the franchise is looking at the big picture rather than a W in a regular season game.
