Two unscathed teams in group B will tussle to go for the leadership among the pack and avoid an elimination match-up in the next round against the types of Spain and France in Day 2 of the FIBA Basketball World Cup in Sevilla, Spain.

How they got to 1-0 is tale of two teams. Croatia got the surprise of its life when it sweat blood and tears to dispatch a pesky Philippines squad, needing overtime to squeeze out a 81-78 winner. Bojan Bogdanovic shone brightest for the Croats who shot a mesmerizing 50% in field goals translating to a game high 26 points. Their defense and composure will be tested once again as the team struggled to contain penetration from a smaller Philippine squad that produced a ton of scoring opportunities off dribble drive penetrations.

Argentina, on the other hand, cruised in dismantling equally talented South American team, Puerto Rico, by finishing the game with the score 98-75. The Argentinians showed consistency from the first buzzer and at one point shot an incredulous 75% from the field. The absence of San Antonio Spurs forward Manu Ginobili was not felt by the squad as veterans Luis Scola (20 pts., 9 rebs.) and Andres Nocioni (18 pts., 11 rebs.) provided the offense and the hustle. What added to the firepower were the contributions of seldom used Salem Safar who registered 18 points on 55% percent shooting.

Argentina showed its experience and chemistry as it displayed a fluid passing offense which is in stark contrast their rival Puerto Ricans who resorted to one on one and hero ball possessions when the offense stagnated. Croatia is still a dangerous squad possessing several big men who can shoot from beyond such as Bogdanovic, Philadelphia 76ers draftee Dario Saric and Indiana Pacers reserve Damjan Rudez. Expect a toe to toe match in this one.
