Loaned Chelsea striker Fernando Torres will head back to his boyhood club Atletico Madrid when the winter transfer window opens, as a report suggests that a deal to such effect has already been finalised.

The 30-year-old Spaniard failed to impress at AC Milan after the west London outfit handed him out last summer. He netted one in his second Serie A game, but that was just about it, misfiring in the next nine games and did not play during the recent four games.

"Our understanding is that Chelsea, Atletico Madrid and AC Milan have reached an agreement for Fernando Torres to go back to Atletico Madrid," said Sky Sports journalist Guillem Balague.

"It was all discussed, negotiated and agreed yesterday. It seems it is all confirmed. We have not received details from the club yet but (Atletico manager) Simeone asked for Fernando Torres three weeks ago."

"In fact, he wanted him in the summer but there was a transfer fee to be paid at that time that Atletico Madrid could not afford. The suggestion is that Chelsea have let him go for free but in any case it seems confirmed that Fernando Torres returns home."

An initial effort to revive Torres' ailing form came when Rafa Benitez, who was responsible for the Madrid native's move to Liverpool when he was still the boss at Anfield in 2007, was appointed by Roman Abramovich as interim manager in November 2012. However, Torres still failed to meet expectations.

He was given his fair share of opportunities under Jose Mourinho, but the Portuguese was apparently not satisfied with Torres' performance during the 2013-14 season.

It still remains to be seen whether Torres will be able to get his old groove back under Diego Simeone, whom he once played alongside with at the Vicente Calderon.
