What was life like for the boys of One Direction before they made it big?

Docomo, a mobile operator company in Japan, recently got the British boy band as its endorser; and on Monday, they released a commercial featuring Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson, along with a few behind-the-scenes footages.

For the commercial, the boys talked about their lives prior to coming together as a group and making it big worldwide.

'A couple of years ago, life was pretty simple,' confesses Harry. 'actually liked school, I just didn't like homework.'

Liam, on the other hand, admits that back then he was not as 'fashionable' as he was today.

Louis, for his part, says that they would all 'hang out at the park, like typical British teens,' but then he also confesses that he kept his head down often in class.

Meanwhile, Zayn revealed that he took photos and did an interview about their lives three years ago.

'For most of us, that was just being at school and at college, and what it was like to live with our mums and stuff,' says Zayn.

Some of the boys were recently involved in controversy, with Harry commenting on Justin Bieber's involvement in an egg-throwing incident. He posted over Twitter a photo of two plates of scrambled eggs, captioned simply with 'Egg off.'

Liam, on the other hand, put on fire for posting over Twitter a photo of him standing on the edge of a balcony. Last Tuesday, he posted his apology for the posting of the photo, also on Twitter.

'You may have seen a photo of me today taken on top of a building. I regret being there and having a photo taken,' tweeted Liam. 'It was a stupid and irresponsible thing to do. I am sorry, and do not endorse any fans trying to repeat this, as it is extremely dangerous.'
