Kylie Jenner’s famous pout has instigated a viral trend among teenagers on social media over the weekend. Girls dangerously attempted to imitate the reality star’s lips by using any suctioning device they can find and later posting the disastrous results all over Twitter and Instagram.

Kylie Jenner’s lips have been noticeably fuller these days, but she has previously denied rumours of plastic surgery and revealed that her famous pout was only achieved by lip liner magic. On Sunday, the hashtag #KylieJennerChallenge blew up online, wherein girls were encouraged to mimic the 17-year-old’s mega pout, which led to dangerous DIY lip jobs.

The challenge pushed people to place a shot glass or a plastic cup on their lips and then suck as hard as they can for about five minutes. The pressure rushes blood to the lips, causing them to briefly swell, just as they would when cosmetic injection is involved.

However, the method could also cause serious pain, bruising, and scarring around the mouth, which the people who took the challenge clearly did not expect. The day after the viral trend sparked, #KylieJennerChallengeGoneWrong flooded the Internet with pictures of the disastrous results, which ranged from simple bruises to extensive trauma that required hospitalisation, TMZ reported.

The treacherous stunt faced criticism from other Twitter users, feminists and most especially doctors, who generally thought of the whole ordeal as dumb and irresponsible. They also provided explanation on what happens when the suctioning was done, saying that sucking the glass could injure or infect the lips, causing them to lose sensation. “It’s like punching yourself in the face or running your face into the wall,” Dr Scot Glasberg, President of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, or ASPS, told Fox News.

The self-created injuries would heal over time; however, ulcerations and even permanent disfigurement is inevitable when the technique is attempted repeatedly, dermatologic surgeon Dendy Engleman said. Generally, doctors strongly advised the people not to do the DIY lip job technique.

Emily Orofino, a writer for Pop Sugar, expressed her dismay on young girls, some of them even younger than the “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” star, who went overboard just to look like their favourite celebrities. “I am not against body modification by any means,” she said, as quoted by Washington Post. “I am against young women — who aren’t fully developed (physically or mentally) — making uninformed decisions that could change their looks forever.”
