A British fugitive found living in Sydney under an alias has claimed that he is innocent of the charge that he faked his death to get a $2 million in life insurance and has dared the U.K. police to arrest him in Australia.

Hugo Sanchez is believed to be the fugitive Alfredo Sanchez and the NSW Police said it has informed the Australian Federal Police. The AFP said the case is a matter for U.K. authorities, according to News.com.au.

In an interview by the news website on Tuesday, Sanchez denied newspaper reports that he and his wife ripped off an insurance company.

He also denied reports that his 44-year-old wife is jailed in the U.K. for presenting his fake death certificate to get the insurance claims. The British press reported that Sophie Sanchez was arrested in the U.K. in September when she flew there for her sister's wedding.

"Sophie is not in jail, she is with family, that's all," Sanchez said, according to Newscom.au.

When asked why his and his wife's identities were the same as the fugitive's name and the jailed wife, his reply was, "Excuse me, I am innocent until proven guilty ... I have not done anything. If they want me, they can come and get me."

Police's suspicion on Sanchez's fraudulent death grew after his wife presented his death certificate, which bore his fingerprint. Police then tracked Sanchez after learning that his staff card was being used.
