Award-winning actress Angelina Jolie discusses her beliefs in overcoming struggle and the lessons she has learned from the story of Louis Zamperini, the real-life character that inspired her recently directed “based on a true story” film Unbroken.

Angelina Jolie said a lot of inspiring words as she reflected on Louis Zamperini’s life story in the interview held with Elle Magazine. “Like many of the greatest human stories, it is about the capacity of regular men and women to rise above adversity,” she says when asked about the lesson she learned from Zamperini’s story. “It reminds us never to give up, and that having the spirit to fight is what really matters. It is powerful because it speaks to the potential inside all of us.”

The story of the late Louis Zamperini is about how the former Olympic runner was captured and sent to a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp after surviving a near-fatal plane crash during World War II. His story was interpreted by Angelina Jolie in a moving film entitled Unbroken, directed and produced by Jolie herself. “I do believe in the old saying 'What does not kill you makes you stronger.' Our experiences, good and bad, make us who we are. By overcoming difficulties, we gain strength and maturity,” Jolie says.

Truly, Angelina Jolie is one to know about overcoming struggles after the cancer-scare she went through in 2013. Jolie recently wrote in New York Times op-ed about her decision to undergo preventive double mastectomy after a simple blood test revealed a threat of cancer. "I told myself to stay calm, to be strong and that I had no reason to think I wouldn’t live to see my children grow up and to meet my grandchildren," she wrote, showing her bravery.

The 39-year old actress made her first post-surgery appearance at the Kids’ Choice Awards with her kids Zahara and Shiloh. She was awarded Favorite Villain in her role as Maleficent in the 2014 film “Maleficent” where she reminded her fans after receiving the award to be proud to be different.
