Long running CW series “The Vampire Diaries” is now nearing its sixth season’s finale and fans are buzzing over how the details of the final episode will be tied with Nina Dobrev’s exit from the show. However, more rumors about other cast members following her footsteps have apparently came to light, upsetting the fans and making them question: Will the vampire series push through will the seventh season without most of its key characters?

Early in January, CW president Mark Pedowitz has announced that the show had just been renewed for the 2015-2016 season, confirming its release date for the fall this year. Fans rejoiced as they got excited to see where the adventures of the Salvatore brothers Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan (Paul Wesley), the girl who got caught in between them Elena Gilbert (Dobrev), and the rest of the supernatural beings of Mystic Falls will go on from the end of the current season.

However, Dobrev announced earlier this month that she was officially exiting from the show by the end of the sixth season, with Michael Trevino, who plays Tyler Lockwood, following her a few days later. The news upset most of the TVD fandom, who wondered how her character will end up in the finale and how TVD will go on to the next season without its main girl.

The currently running season, which has three episodes left before its finale on May 14, is now at the point where Damon is about to make a decision on whether or not he will take the vampire cure with Elena. Dobrev’s exit from the show in real life skyrockets the chances of her ending up as a human in the series as to enable a smooth departure in the finale, since the supernatural are the show’s main focus.

While it is still unclear whether Damon will oblige to living a human life with Elena or not, rumors claim that if he proceeds with the plan, it would mean the end for Somerhalder’s time on the CW series as well, IB Times stated. There has been no confirmation of said rumor, although Wesley also previously hinted that a new cast is underway for the seventh season.

“I think next season will be kind of interesting because I think it’s -- I think they’re gonna shift the dynamic because I’m not sure if it’s gonna be the same cast, to be honest with you,” he said in an interview, as quoted by Collider. Wesley, who is also directing the series, added that while he was not sure of what the next season will bring, he believed that he still had another year in the show.

Previous reports also claimed that TVD’s big three (Somerhalder, Wesley and Dobrev) will be in talks with Warner Bros. Studio soon and that only a few of the rest of the cast have decided to sign an agreement for season seven. That being said, more speculations that the showrunners are now unsure whether they wish to proceed with the hit series have risen, Upsmash reported.

Executive producer Julie Plec however explained earlier this year that the show will go on “as long as the actors want the show to go on,” adding that there are already big plans for seasons seven to 10. “I said I want to be part of it as long as I know I could keep telling good stories and as long as the ensemble people that I work with want to be there and are committed and dedicated,” she said.

Plec also said that how long the show will go on will depend on how the story is doing well, adding that they now have to make sure they don’t “start sucking.” Other cast members have also recently voiced out their opinions, hoping that the fans will be able to get past the sad reality that some main characters will no longer be a part of the picture and that they would still be interested with the story lines that are in store for the next season.
