US Open 2014 - Roger Federer could be on his way back to the top of the world rankings, thanks to his superb form on the hard court as of late. ATP World Tour analyst Josh Meiseles discussed in his latest article the Swiss Maestro's resurgence and his charge towards becoming men's tennis top player.

At 33-years old, Federer proved that age is just a number following a vintage 'Federer-esque' performance at the Rogers Cup and Cincinnati Masters. The ageing Swiss has been dominant against younger competitions and very much composed in tough matches.

By reaching the final of the Rogers Cup and bagging his third title of the year at Cincinnati Masters, Federer narrowed the gulf that separated him and reigning world's no.2 Rafael Nadal. And with the Spaniard skipping the upcoming hard-court Grand Slam next week, Meiseles sees it as an opportunity for Federer to draw closer or even make a run at world's no.1 before the year ends.

The analyst thinks another strong performance at the upcoming US Open championships, where he will have a lot easier route than his main rivals (Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray on the same bracket), will give Federer more momentum to reclaim his throne.

"So should Federer rise to first place in the Race after Flushing Meadows, he would have a strong chance of finishing year-end World No. 1 for a sixth time after November's Barclays ATP World Tour Finals," Meiseles.stated.

The Big Turnaround

After a disappointing 2013 campaign that saw him fighting to stay in the top-10, Federer has revived his tennis career this year by using a bigger racket and hiring a career-changing coach Stefan Edberg, who infused a modified serve and volley approach to the Swiss.

Aside from his huge vase trophy at Cincinnati, Federer also claimed the top prize in Dubai and Halle. He also had a handful of runner-up finishes and even reached his first Grand Slam final in two years at the Wimbledon Open.

Now, he seems to have set his sight on becoming world's no.1 for the sixth time in his career. But achieving such feat requires Federer to have another inspiring performances at the US Open, the Asian Circuit of the ATP tour and the last tournament of the year at the ATP World Tour finals.
