Maria Sharapova lost in a three-set match, 7-6 (4), 6-7 (5), 6-2, to Caroline Wozniacki at the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Finals in Singapore on October 21. Sharapova was reportedly disappointed of her loss and blamed herself from making too many mistakes. It was Sharapova's second straight loss to Wozniacki.

Sharapova lost the first set in a tie-break, 7-4, but rallied to force a decider. Sharapova broke Wozniacki in the second set on another tie-break, 7-5. In the third set, Sharapova ultimatey fell to the Dane, 6-2. In the match that lasted three hours and 13 minutes, the Russian World No. 2 committed 76 unforced errors and 15 double faults. Wozniacki, on the other hand, had only 36 unforced errors.

"As a competitor after a three-hour match, it's tough to be the one that loses it," Sharapova said in an interview after the match. "I really feel that a lot of reasons why the match turned out that way is because of what I did," she added.

Meanwhile, Wozniacki was delighted of her victory. She said the match had tired her, but nonetheless, it was a "great match." The Dane said that the first set was always tough. However, when she found her rhythm, she was able to take control of everything. "In the third set, I felt like I really stepped it up and really started being aggressive and going for my shots more," Wozniacki said via WTA's official website.

Wozniacki best tennis pal Serena Williams, who also won her opening match against Ana Ivanovic on October 20, was also happy for her victory. Williams couldn't contain her happiness and tweeted after the match.

The opener at the WTA Finals in Singapore was the eight meeting for Sharapova and Wozniacki. They last played against each other at the 2014 U.S. Open, where the Dane defeated Sharapova in a three-set match. Sharapova still leads their head-to-head record, 5-3.

Sharapova will face Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova, who lost to Agnieszka Radwanska in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, next. Sharapova has played against Kvitova twice in the current season, and Sharapova won in both instances, in Beijing, 6-4 2-6 6-3, and in Miami, 7-5 6-1.

Wozniacki, in turn, will play against Radwanska. The pair had last met at the 2014 Cincinnati Masters, where Wozniacki won, 6-4 7-6 (5).
