At the just concluded fifth round or the quarter-finals of the Capital One Cup three matches went according to the script while the fourth produced a massive upset. Chelsea FC, Tottenham Hotspur FC and Liverpool FC all qualified for their respective semi-finals whereas Southampton FC lost to Sheffield United FC to bow out of the competition. In the semi-final draw, Liverpool FC have been drawn against Chelsea FC while Tottenham Hotspur FC will face Sheffield United FC.

At Pride Park, Derby, in the first quarter-finals Derby County FC was beaten by Premier League high fliers Chelsea FC with a one three score line. Derby County, who play two divisions below Chelsea, went behind after an Eden Hazard strike on the 23rd minute. The lead was doubled by Filipe Luis on the 56th minute. Derby County got a goal back when Craig Bryson scored in the 71th minute. The German international Andre Schurrle made it three for Chelsea on the 82nd minute. In the next quarter-final Sheffield United FC, who play three divisions below Southampton FC humbled them by a goal scored by Marc McNulty on the 63rd minute.

In the third quarter-final match, the only one featuring two Premier League teams, Tottenham Hotspurs FC hammered Newcastle FC four nil. Nabil Bentaled opened the scoring for the home side on the 18th minute of the match. After half time the home side scored three more goals with Nacer Chadli scoring in the 46th minute, Harry Kane scoring in the 65th minute and finally Roberto Soldado scoring in the 70th minute. In the last quarter-final match away to Dean Court, Boscombe, Bournemouth, Liverpool FC beat AFC Bournemouth one three with a brace from the young England international Raheem Sterling and another from Lazar Markovic. Dan Gosling reduced the deficit for the home side.

The semi-finals to be played in the third and the fourth weeks of January will be a two legged affair with Chelsea and Sheffield United hosting the first legs. The final match is scheduled to be played on Mar. 1 at the Wembley Stadium. At the present moment Chelsea FC are odds on favourite to lift the trophy.
