They started out as squabbling kids, but Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley eventually found love in one another. Harry Potter’s best friends ended up together, but author JK Rowling admitted that she shouldn’t have married the two off.

Fans of the book series, as well as the movie franchise, appeared to be quite happy with how the “Harry Potter” story. Harry ended with Ron’s younger sister, Ginny, while his two best friends, Ron and Hermione, got their happily ever after as a couple as well.

The pairing of Ron and Hermione was what Rowling had envisioned at first. But she admitted that the two are not a credible couple, and therefore shouldn’t have ended up together.

“I wrote the Hermione/Ron relationship as a form of wish fulfilment,” she says. That’s how it was conceived, really. For reasons that have very little to do with literature and far more to do with me clinging to the plot as I first imagined it. Hermione ended up with Ron,” Rowling told Wonderland magazine in an interview, as previewed by the Sunday Times.

“I know, I’m sorry,” she continued. “I can hear the rage and fury it might cause some fans, but if I’m absolutely honest, distance has given me perspective on that. It was a choice I made for very personal reasons, not for reasons of credibility. Am I breaking people’s hearts by saying this? I hope not.”

She added that “Romione” would have needed “relationship counselling.”

Hermione’s actor, Emma Watson, agreed with the author, saying, “I think there are fans out there who know that too and who wonder whether Ron would have really been able to make her happy.”

What should have happened, according to Rowling, was Hermione marrying Harry in the end because they “were a better match.”

It all turned out great for Harry’s sidekick, though. Aside from marrying Hermione, Ron, played by Rupert Grint, passed his Muggle driving test (though with the help of confundus charm), got two lovely kids (Rose and Hugo) with Hermione, and became an Auror.

All that wouldn’t have happened if Rowling had gone with killing him. The British author admitted in a 2011 interview with Daniel Radcliffe, who portrayed Harry Potter in the film series, that midway through writing the series, she considered killing Ron.
