The kaiju genre has a long, distinguished history with gaming, dating back to early titles like "Rampage," "The Movie Monster Game" and modern classics like "War of the Monsters." Bandai Namco Games are aiming to bring those memories back with its newest kaiju simulator, "Godzilla: The Game." The company has confirmed that "Godzilla: The Game" will be released in North America and Europe this July.

The announcement comes via a tweet on the official "Godzilla: The Game" Twitter account. The announcement includes a short trailer featuring snippets of gameplay that introduce one of the game's antagonists. In the trailer, Godzilla's arch-nemesis, Mothra, is seen flying above Tokyo, destroying buildings and firing projectile beams at the giant lizard.

It's worth noting that this iteration of Godzilla is based on the original Toho designs and not the 2014 movie directed by Gareth Edwards. Developed in-house by Bandai Namco Games, "Godzilla: The Game" was originally released on Dec. 18 in Japan. As Gematsu notes, the title is slated for release on PS3 and PS4, though no exact date in July has been announced.

"Godzilla: The Game" features four primary game modes: Destruction Mode, King of Monsters Mode, Evolution Mode and Diorama Mode. Destruction mode sees the player attacking a set number of stages in order to destroy all of its G-Energy Generators. Obliterating these, as well as buildings and military vehicles, will allow Godzilla to grow in size. King of the Monsters Mode is six levels long and sees the player take on a different kaiju boss at the end of each level. Evolution mode allows Godzilla to unlock new attacks and abilities as he defeats a raft of enemies and certain types of structures, while Diorama mode lets gamers unlock monster models for viewing.

"Godzilla: The Game" features at least nine different kaiju for the King of Monsters to tackle, including Mechagodzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah, Gigan and an appearance by the American Godzilla. In its review of an import copy, PlayStation Lifestyle gave the game a 4/10, stating that hardcore Godzilla fans might just be able to squeeze some enjoyment out of the game, but that regular gamers should probably look elsewhere.
