In a "completely unexpected" manner, as her partner described the experience, a 23-year-old Canadian woman has given birth aboard an Air Canada flight to Tokyo after going into labour over the Pacific Ocean.

The young woman delivered a baby girl with the help of another fellow passenger who was a doctor. An Air Canada spokesman said, the crew requested for medical help among the passengers.

The plane was given priority landing at Narita Airport, not too far from the Japanese capital. But even before the aircraft could be taxied to a halt, it got its additional passenger onboard. "I couldn't imagine. This happened completely unexpectedly," the father, whose name was not revealed, told Japanese television. "It turned out to be a beautiful baby girl," he added, who showed the pictures of their little bundle of joy taken on his mobile phone. The flight was bound for Narita, Japan from Calgary, Canada landed half and hour ahead of its scheduled after being given preference by the air traffic controllers.

The new mother was taken out of the plane in a wheelchair, while her partner brought their newborn in his arms. Though both the mother and the child is doing fine, they had been taken to a hospital, where they remained overnight.

Meanwhile, the flight staff waved at press as they got off the plane, they all seemed happy! "Everyone was clapping their hands," a woman passenger told local TV channel. "She's such a cute baby with big eyes. A male passenger added, "This is a happy thing."

Important to mention that Air Canada permits women with a normal pregnancy and no previous history of premature labour to fly up to and including their 36th week. However, it is still not clear whether the women aboard the Air Canada plane was within that prescribed time frame of pregnancy.
