Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said at a White Ribbon Day event at Parliament House on Wednesday that a cultural change and respect towards women can effectively address violence against women in Australia.

He pointed out that the attitude of a man towards his wife or partner would significantly influence the mindset of a younger male around them.

“That is absolutely critically important. We can genuinely change the culture,” Skynews quoted him as saying. “The answer lies within all of us men to make this change. We have to lead by example and the most important place to lead by example is with our children and our grandchildren.”

He also pointed out that disrespect against women does not necessarily always lead to violence but that’s where all the violence begin. Thus, it is the duty of every parent to teach their children to respect women, which is critical.

The prime minister paid tribute to the past and present victims of domestic violence who had to suffer because of the long-standing inaction on the part of the government.

The annual event at the parliament was also attended by Opposition leader Bill Shorten, Greens Senator Richard di Natale MP and the CEO of White Ribbon Australia, Libby Davies, along with other members of parliament as well as defence and business leaders.

An annual White Ribbon Walk from Randwick to Coogee Beach was organised to uphold the cause. Thousands of Australians in Sydney took part in the walk. It was not only aimed to raise awareness but also to raise funds for White Ribbon Australia.

“I will stand up, speak out and act to prevent men's violence against women,” was the vow taken by participants at Coogee Beach.
