It looks like TVD couple Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) or "Delena" will continue to face obstacles in the second half "The Vampire Diaries" Season 6 starting with the current villain Kai (Chris Wood). Executive producer Julie Plec also teased that Damon will be dealing with his friendship with Bonnie (Kat Graham) once the Bennett witch returns to the present time in Mystic Falls.

"There are a lot of emotional obstacles," Plec shared in a TV Line interview. According to the executive producer, the obstacles will involve Elena's feelings for Damon, fighting the bad guys, dealing with loss, grief and character exits.

"Do they stay strong, or do they drift apart? I'd really like to see them make it and be happy for a little while," Plec further added. According to a Breathecast report, Julie Plec and "The Vampire Diaries" cast member Ian Somerhalder has talked about the Damon-Elena relationship at the Television Critics Association (TCA) press tour panel.

Julie Plec shared that "Delena," who has been yearning for a "functional relationship," will finally start the love that they did not get right in the beginning. Meanwhile, actor Ian Somerhalder teased that the fans will see Damon truly happy with Elena in the three, four or five months of "honeymoon phase" in their relationship that were skipped over on the show.

When asked about Bonnie's return, Julie Plec teased that the TVD fans can see Bonnie leave the 1994 prison world "by the end of the run of this next chapter" which is from episodes 11 to 15.

The executive producer confirmed that what happened to Bonnie will change the TVD character forever. "She's been to hell and back, so to speak, and she's had to do a lot of it on her own. Anyone who goes through an experience that isolating and that lonely isn't going to come back ready to dive back into their old life," Plec explained.

Julie Plec added that the fans will see Bonnie in the upcoming episodes trying to find her way back and healing herself from the experience of being stuck all alone in the 1994 prison world that was created for Kai. When it comes to Bonnie's relationship with Damon, the executive producer teased that the fans will see if Damon will be the person to help Bonnie heal.

"The Vampire Diaries" Season 6 returns Thursday night, Jan. 22, with episode 11 titled "Woke Up With a Monster." The brand new episode will air at 8/7c on the CW Network.
