Arsenal is expected to complete the signing of FC Basel midfielder Mohamed Elneny by this week. Gunners’ manager Arsene Wenger is optimistic that things will be sorted out soon and the Egyptian will add depth to his squad gunning for the title.

“I expect Mohamed yes, we are positive that this week it can happen. The situation should be sorted out. There are a lot of work permit problems and special papers to do, (the) visa, so we hope we can finalise it this week.” Wenger said, as reported by Sky Sports.

Arsenal are currently at the top of the English Premier League (EPL) table. They head into Wednesday with a huge match against traditional heavyweights Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium before travelling to Stoke on Jan. 17, 2016.

Wenger hopes that by the time the Gunners travel to the Britannia Stadium, the midfield will be strengthened with the signing of Elneny. The 23-year-old Elneny has 39 international caps under his belt for Egypt.

Arsenal currently holds a two-point advantage over second placed Leicester City. However, Wenger believes that the title race is wide open and many teams will be involved in the winter transfer window.

“My prediction is that it could be one of the most active transfer window in January that you have ever seen.” Wenger stated.

Alexis Sanchez is nursing a hamstring injury and will not face Liverpool on Wednesday night. However, the Chilean forward might be back on Sunday for the match against Stoke.

The 20-year-old Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) midfielder Adrien Rabiot has also been linked to join Arsenal in January. Wenger wants to add Rabiot to his midfield line-up as the Frenchman wants to increase his options in midfield. Rabiot is currently struggling to find game time under PSG coach Laurent Blanc.

Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta is also in the news as West Ham looks to sign the former Everton midfielder, according to Spanish publication Fichajes.

Everton manager Slaven Bilic wants to have a shot at Europe and believes that the experienced Spaniard will help them achieve the ambition.

Everton currently lies eleventh in the Premier League table, six points behind Manchester United who are in fifth. Fifth place in the EPL table earns an automatic Europa League group stage spot.
