Australian legendary leg spinner Shane Warne was full of praise for the current Australian off spinner Nathan Lyon after the later bagged five wickets in the first innings of the first Test Match of the Border Gavaskar Trophy. Warne thought that Lyon bowled at his best when he gave the ball a lot of air and was not afraid to be taken for some runs. He did exactly that, flighted the ball and landed it on the footmarks caused by the fast bowlers. When it dropped on the footmarks it spun viciously and bounced uncomfortably causing the downfall of five Indian wickets.

He got Cheteshwar Pujara out by shear tenacity. He kept on bowling the right line and length and eventually Pujara failing to cover the spin of a delivery inside edged one to the stumps. Ajinkya Rahane got a delivery that bounced awkwardly from the bowlers footmarks and took the edge of his bat on the way to a fielder. He beat Rohit Sharma with the flight when the batsman advanced down the pitch towards the bowler. He ended up being caught and bowled. Wriddhiman Saha was given out caught bat-pad to a classical off spinner that dropped and spun gorgeously. Finally the guile of Lyon was too much for the tail-ender Ishant Sharma who prodded a simple catch to a close in fielder.

This was Nathan Lyon's sixth five wicket haul in Test Match cricket and the second against India. The other four have come against England, South Africa, Sri Lanka and West Indies. This was his second five wicket haul in Australia while the other four have come in India, South Africa, Sri Lanka and West Indies. The other wicket takers for Australia were Mitchell Johnson and Peter Siddle with two each and Ryan Harris with another.
