The Buffalo Sabres and Winnipeg Jets got involved in a blockbuster trade on Wednesday as the team exchanged pieces ahead of the National Hockey League, or NHL, trade deadline. Evander Kane and Zach Bogosian will be moving to Buffalo while Tyler Myers, Drew Stafford, two other prospects and a first-round pick are going to Winnipeg.

"This was not a knee-jerk reaction," Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff said in an article at the league’s official website, nhl.com. "I'm excited what this trade brings to our organization. … I feel good with the 'now,' but I’m really excited about the prospects of the future in this whole deal.”

For his part, Kane was quoted saying that it’s to go to a team that wants him. Kane, who spent the last four seasons with the Jets, thanked his previous team and the fans for their support on social media Twitter adding that he’s excited to be playing for a new team, which ranks last in the Eastern Conference and the entire league. Buffalo, which holds a record of 16-36-3 for 35 points, owns three first round picks in the 2015 NHL Draft and will send one to Winnipeg, which is in contention for a postseason slot this year at 28-19-10 for 66 points.

Kane logged in 14 goals and 25 points in 38 games this season. He has 109 goals and 222 points in 361 games over the past six seasons. The prospects acquired by the Jets are Joel Armia and Brendan Lemieux. The NHL trade deadline this season is on March 2, 2015.

Sabres general manager Tim Murray was excited in acquiring the 22 year old Kane, whom the GM said just needed a change of scenery. The move to the Buffalo will give him that according to Murray and that they are expected make him an important piece in the team’s rebuilding process. The Sabres will most likely end up with the no. 1 or no. 2 pick in the 2015 NHL Draft where they are expected to select either Connor McDavid or Jack Eichel, two top prospects among the rookies this year.
