One Direction has scored another victory with their third album, "Midnight Memories." The third album is leading the Billboard chart with more than half a million copies sold in its first week upon release. Yet, that's not the only number the English band has aced up their sleeve.

The group now makes chart history for being the only band in the music industry ranking No. 1 on Billboard. USA Today noted that “the win is not only first for One Direction, but also a first in music history.”

The English-Irish band is the only group in recent years to have achieved such historical record since 1967. Monkees was the only group since late 60s with three albums in a row to have topped the chart.

The Monkees may have been the only group five decades to have ranked number one on Billboard but it did not sell more than half million copies in its first week. Billboard said that N’Sync and Backstreet Boys are the only two other groups with record sales more than 500,000 copies in its first week.

Citing records by Nielsen SoundScan, USA Today noted that One Direction sold 546, 000 for its album, “Midnight Memories.” Their two other albums in previous years soared to the top including, “Up All Night,” (2011) with 176,000 copies and “Take Me Home,” (2012) with 540,000 copies.

During their visit at “Good Morning America” last week, members of One Direction shared their thoughts on the success of their group and their third album. It was selling like pancakes the moment it hit the market last week.

Louis Tomlinson, one of the group members stressed that “it’s such a hard thing to comprehend,” referring to the success of their group.

“We had a bit of a toast and celebration. It’s such a hard thing to get your head around. It’s a testament to how amazing our fans are, you know?” quoted Tomlinson in an interview by ABC News.

According to BBC UK, citing a report by Official Charts Company, the group’s third album, “Midnight Memories" was also a big hit when released in the UK selling 145,000 copies just three days after it was released. BBC Official Singles Chart also recorded the latest track of 1D’s third album, “Story of My Life,” at number one.

One Direction was formed by British Mogul Simon Cowell for the “X Factor UK,” and they won third in the reality singing competition. Members of the group are Harry Styles (who coined the group name, One Direction), Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik and Liam Payne.
