The New York Knicks are reportedly interested in trading for Detroit Pistons point guard Brandon Jennings, who is set to have his season debut this month.

The unofficial start of the trade season begins this week as summer signings and rookies become eligible to be traded to other NBA teams. The Knicks, which have an 11-14 record, are one of the teams that need a roster upgrade to boost their campaign in a surprisingly tough Eastern Conference.

The Knicks are currently lacking the needed production in their point guard rotation of Jose Calderon and Jeraint Grant, who are only averaging a combined total of 6.5 points and 3.1 assists.

According to Marc Berman of the New York Post, the Knicks have plans to address their backcourt issues next summer, when PG stars like Rajon Rondo and Mike Conley are available. But Berman also revealed that New York also considers in fixing the team’s point guard woes before this season’s trade deadline.

While Berman noted the possibility of the Knicks trading for Jennings, he also insisted that they would still wait to see if Jennings still has much left after suffering an Achilles tear last year. Nevertheless, Berman devised a trade scenario for the Knicks that could work out if both teams agree with the pieces involved.

"The Pistons have their new starting point guard in Reggie Jackson, and Jennings is in the last year of a three-year, $15 million deal,” Berman disclosed. “Trading the pact of Calderon, a former Piston, for Jennings straight-up wouldn't do the trick but adding Grant or a big man to a package could be more enticing.”

Jennings has averaged 16.6 points per game along with 6.2 assists and 3.2 rebounds in six NBA seasons. Prior to his season-ending injury, he played 41 games with the Pistons, with an average of 15.4 points and 6.6 assists per game.

Jennings is on the final year of his three-year $24 million contract with the Pistons. Aaron McMann of the Michigan Live noted that Jennings’ expiring contract could entice other NBA teams to trade for him as a short-term help rather than a long-term investment.

But Steve Kyler of Basketball Insiders is convinced Jennings is expendable, especially with Reggie Jackson becoming the Pistons’ PG starter.

"There is a sense that Jennings will be moved at some point, especially if he can return some frontcourt depth for Detroit; however there is also a sense that Detroit isn't in any hurry to make a change either,” Kyler wrote.

It would be hard to imagine Jennings could solve the point guard issues the Knicks have, considering the devastating effect of such an injury. But if he could still showcase his skills that made him a star PG in Milwaukee, the Knicks instantly becomes a playoff contender in the East.
