A spate of recent accidents involving Boston Red Sox fans have given the term of endearment "Beantown" a whole new meaning.

While it has been an outstanding post-season for the so far, their fans have not been so lucky.

During the fifth inning of Saturday's American League division series Game 2 victory against the Tampa Bay Rays, pinch-hitter Stephen Drew struck a foul ball down the first base line. The ball bounced twice, getting slowed down, then a third bounce clipped the top of the tarp in front of the seats, ricocheted off the barrier, and struck spectator Doug Crossley of Natick, Massachussetts, in the chin. Luckily, Crossley was wearing a beard, reducing the impact of the ball.

Crossley might be cross that he both missed the ball and got beaned by it, but he's still in high spirits. After all, he got the ball back after the ball girl made the retrieval.

"I'm going to try to get it signed by Stephen Drew, because he's the one that hit me in the mouth with it," Crossley told Cut 4.

The incident on Saturday isn't the first time fans have gotten hit by wayward hits. On Sept 5, a fan tried to catch a foul ball, flailing his arms about and hitting his seatmates' phone and foamy beverage. Two weeks later, a 74-year-old man suffered a laceration when Jonny Gomes punted a beer can into the crowd, hitting the hapless spectator in the face. Gomes said he was "bummed out" by the incident, which happened during celebrations marking the Red Sox's return to the post-season.

The common denominator? All of them happened at right field. Looks like it's better to stay to the left, at least for the remainder of the post-season. The Red Sox currently lead the Rays 2-1 in the series after losing Monday's game in St. Petersburg. No news, though, if Crossley plans to attend Thursday's game, which returns to Fenway Park after a two-game stop at Tropicana Field.
