For “Downton Abbey” characters, it is time to look forward to another year. But unfortunately, viewers won’t be able to see what happens next in the lives of these much loved characters. The curtain came down on this popular British period drama on Christmas, and each character on the show got his or her happy ending. It was almost a fairytale kind of goodbye, minus the end note: “And, they lived happily ever after.”

Here is what happened in “Downton Abbey” final episode (RECAP):

Edith marries Bertie

Edith Crawley (Laura Carmichael) finally got to experience absolute happiness. She and Bertie Pelham (Harry Hadden-Paton) got married on New Year’s eve, and they were on their way to their honeymoon when the clock rang in the New Year. It was Mary (Michelle Dockery) who had set them up in London, and Bertie did not take more than a few seconds to declare that he cannot live without Edith.

Lord Grantham (Hugh Bonneville) and Lady Cora (Elizabeth McGovern) received the news late in the night about Edith and Bertie's decision to be engaged again. Bertie’s mother (Patricia Hodge), for a couple of scenes, emerged as someone who would spoil Edith’s love story. But Edith won her over with her honesty. She told Mrs Pelham about her daughter, Marigold, before the engagement announcement, although she could have chosen to keep quiet.

Henry Talbot's new venture and Mary is pregnant

Henry Talbot (Matthew Goode) quit racing, and after that, he was worried about Mary thinking less of him because he was a jobless man living off his rich wife. He and Tom Branson (Alex Leech) established a used car business. Henry was concerned that Mary may not think highly of the business, but she snubbed that concern and told him she was proud of him. She also surprised him by whispering in his ear that she was pregnant.

Carson retires and Barrow replaces him

Carson (Jim Carter) retired because of his trembling hand, which made him incapable of fulfilling his duties as the Butler. Lord Grantham told him that he would still continue to steer things.

Thomas Barrow (Rob James-Collier) got a heart-touching farewell when he left the estate, to work for a new family. He returned to attend Edith’s wedding and got the offer to become the new Butler. As he was not happy at his new workplace, Barrow was delighted to receive the offer and started working, immediately.

What else happened in “Downton Abbey” final episode:

Anna (Joanne Froggatt) gave birth to a baby boy in Mary’s room.

Merton (Douglas Reith) was diagnosed with pernicious anemia. Lady Isobel (Penelope Wilton) took on Merton's son and his evil daughter-in-law -- with encouragement received from Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith) -- and announced her decision to marry him and take care of him. The evil husband-wife duo had tried to stop her from meeting Merton. On Edith’s wedding day, the married couple Merton and Isobel got the good news that his anemia is not pernicious.

Lord Grantham praised his wife and called her a woman of substance after watching her chair a meeting at the hospital.

Daisy (Sophie McShera) and Andy (Michael Fox) hooked up, and the former also decided to move into the farm with Mr Mason (Paul Copley). Mr Manson was happy to hear that, and he told Mrs Pattimore (Lesley Nicol) that he would now see her more often.

There was also the hint of a happy ending for Baxter (Raquel Cassidy) and Moseley (Kevin Doyle). Meanwhile, Moseley moved to a cottage and took up teaching as a full-time profession.

There was also a hint that Branson may end up with the magazine editor, who caught Edith's tossed bouquet.

Dowager Countess found out about Spratt's (Jeremy Swift) dual identities as the Butler and the agony aunt columnist because of Denker (Sue Johnston). The latter thought that the revelation would get Spratt fired, but Violet Crawley became his fan.
