The most Emmy nominated British show’s finale trailer indicated that it is going to be a tear-jerker. It will see the Highclere Castle regulars like Patricia Hodge (Miranda) will be joined by those who had left the show earlier. Lily James (Rose), Matt Berber and Peter Egan will return on the finale to give it a festive send-off.

“Mary endeavours to build bridges with her sister while Edith’s secret continues to pose a threat, despite having nothing left to lose,” said the release for the episode. The family (upstairs) and their servants (downstairs) prepare to welcome in 1926, according to Hollywood Reporter.

Henry Talbot (Matthew Goode) who got married to Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) in episode 8 of “Downton Abbey,” tries to adjust to his personal life as the stepfather of a boy and a husband. Meanwhile, it remains to be seen whether Lady Edith (Laura Carmichael) gets her share of happiness. Mary had in the previous episode told Bertie Pelham (Harry Hadden-Paton) about Edith’s love child, Marigold.

However, according to Express UK, Edith may not need a husband at all. “Who is to say that a husband constitutes a happy ending? What is so fabulous about Edith is that she hasn’t just stayed at home moping, said Carmichael. According to her, Edith is made of “sterner stuff.”

Talking about Edith, she added that though the latter was desperate for marriage, after her disaster with men, she forged her own path. The actress said that Edith can drive, she took a job in the war, she’s a single mother and a “woman publisher in a man’s world,” so she is a modern role model. In an exclusive interview with Event magazine, Carmichael said that viewers will have to see what happens during the Christmas special.

It was earlier teased that “Downton Abbey” finale episode will have at least one wedding.

Mary now does her best to build bridges between Edith and Bertie. The two come face to face during the New Year Eve party, but to know what happens, viewers have to tune in to the Christmas special on Dec. 25. The concluding episode was shot at Alnwick Castle, which doubled as the location for Brancaster, home of Bertie Pelham, the new Marquess of Hexham.

Filming took place in the interior rooms of the Castle as well as on the estate, while dining scenes were shot in London's famed Ritz hotel. “When I got the final script, I turned straight to the last page to see how it ended and I thought it was entirely appropriate,” said Hugh Bonneville, who plays Robert, Earl of Grantham. He added that he choked up when he read the script, Express UK reports.
