'Desperate Housewives' Actress, Polly Bergen, died of natural causes at the age of 84 on Sep. 20. Bergen had emphysema but died peacefully at her home in Connecticut, said her publicist, Judy Katz.

According to BBC, she was born in Tennessee as Nellie Paulina Burgin. Her father was a construction engineer in addition to a talented amateur singer. Between 1957 and 1958, she presented her own variety show for CBS in which her father also performed with her.

Bergen attained success early in her career. For her portrayal of singer Helen Morgan on the famed anthology series 'Playhouse 90' in the 1950s, she won a Golden Globe. She also appeared in the television series 'Desperate Housewives' in which she played the role of the mother of Lynette Scavo, Stella Wingfield, for which she was nominated for an Emmy.

She also got nominated for many other awards and achieved a lot of success in her career of over six decades. She managed to get a Golden Globe nomination for her 1963 film 'The Caretakers'. She was nominated for a Tony award for her role in a revival of the musical Follies and an Emmy nomination for best supporting actress for a mini-series, 'War and Remembrance.'

She portrayed the role of the first female United States president in the movie 'Kisses for My President.' In The Sopranos in the HBO channel, she played the role of Fran Felstein, the former mistress of the father of Tony Soprano. In the thriller 'Cape Fear', she played the role of Gregory Peck's wife.

In addition to playing roles in films, stage musicals and TV dramas, she made albums and even founded a company of beauty products. She was also a popular game show panellist.

A lot of people paid tribute to the actress through Twitter. Seth MacFarlane, the creator of Family guy, wrote:

Her children Peter Fields, Kathy Lander and Pamela Fields and her three grandchildren survive her, reported Yahoo. Her publicist, Katz, had said that in place of flowers, her family has asked that donations to Planned Parenthood be made.
