While other female celebrities such as Jennifer Lawrence have threatened to file a $100 million lawsuit against Google for not removing their hacked naked selfie photos initially published by messaging board Reddit and 4Chan, comedian Chelsea Handler is angry at Instagram for removing her topless photo that she posted on Thursday.

The photo imitated the picture of Russian President Vladimir Putin who had a shirtless image while riding a horse. Defending her post, the comedienne said, "Anything a man can do, a woman has the right to do better."

She added in another Instagram post, "If a man posts a photo of his nipples, it's ok, but not a woman? Are we in 1825?"

While her photo became viral, Instagram took it down immediately, prompting Handler to quit the photo-sharing Web site on Friday over the incident. She later reposted the same image on Twitter which didn't remove the picture. She followed it with a tweet on the same day, saying, "You can now find my dogs and my breasts on Twitter only where my followers have the right to choose."

Instagram has a "free the nipple campaign" which is responsible for removing Handler's topless photo as well as breast pictures of Scout Willis, the daughter of Demi Moore and Bruce Willis.

Facebook, which owns Instagram, allows nipple shots if it's related to mastectomy, breastfeeding and other types of nudity.

In defending its no nudity and mature content policy, Instagram explained, "Remember that our community is a diverse one, and that your posts are visible to people as young as 13 years old. While we respect the artistic integrity of photos and videos, we have to keep our product and the content within it in line with our App Store's rating for nudity and mature content. In other words, please do not post nudity or mature content of any kind."

The 39-year-old comedienne often pokes fun at Mr Putin, whom she said she met at a Jimmy Fallon interview in March. She often jokes that the Russian strongman is her ex-boyfriend and loves to be seen naked in public.
