According to his manager Peter Rix, English had been hospitalised for broken ribs while performing in Newcastle. During surgery, doctors discovered a problem with his aortic valve. The performer’s exact cause of death was a ruptured aortic aneurysm, Rix said.
English rose to fame in his role as Judas in the 1972-74 Australian production of Jesus Christ Superstar. Since then, he has starred in several Gilbert and Sullivan musicals, and was awarded four ARIA awards for his two albums “Turn the Page” (1979) and “Paris” (1990) as well as production and starring in “The Pirates of Penzance”, and production of the rock musical “Paris” (2003). He was also well-known for his role of Bobby Rivers in the 1991 television sitcom “All Together Now”.
