Arsenal FC defender Mathieu Debuchy underwent a left ankle operation after suffering an injury during his side's Premier League clash against Manchester City.

The 29-year-old will be sidelined for three months, which is a major concern for the Gunners as they are deficient in legitimate personnel at the back, in general, following exits by former skipper Thomas Vermaelen and Johan Djourou.

"He has had surgery and will be out for three months," Arsene Wenger told Arsenal.com.

"A reasonable delay is three months."

"It all went well, but it can be a week or two earlier or a week or two later, but it will be around three months."

Summer acquisition Calum Chambers has been chosen to fill the void, thus far, despite initially playing him as a centre-back, while Wenger has previously signified his intention to tap youngster Hector Bellerin if all else fails.

"It is a blow of course, how big it will be we will only know afterwards because it will be down to how well we replace him. We bought [Calum] Chambers for that."
