Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger revealed, for the record, that it is the former Manchester United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo whom he regrettably missed signing and not walk-in trialist Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The Portuguese international moved to Old Trafford in 2003 for a relatively minimal amount of £16million, before making a then record breaking £80million move to Real Madrid in 2009.

But even before that, he helped the Red Devils win three Premier League titles and a Champions League crown, along with a number of other silverwares.

"My biggest regret, I was so close to signing Cristiano Ronaldo," said the French mentor.

"And not only did I not get him, but he signed for Manchester United."

"That, of course, still hurts today."

Meanwhile, Wenger's Gunners were left trophyless during the period when United bagged three straight top-flight honours from 2006/07 to 2008/09, but were consistently included in the top four of the Premiership table.

Had the north Londoners successfully snatched Ronaldo back then, the past decade might have belonged to Arsenal.
