Ryan Murphy, the co-creator of "American Horror Story," has donned the director's hat for the premiere episode of "American Horror Story-Freak Show," which is the Season 4 of the FX's popular horror anthology series. The new season is set in 1952, location Jupiter, Florida, and episode 1 of "American Horror Story--Freak Show" is titled "Monsters Among Us."

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly (EW), Murphy revealed a lot of details about the main characters in the new season. Based on his interview with EW, here are some of the important details about the characters that Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Michael Chiklis, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Emma Roberts, Frances Conroy, Denis O'Hare, John Carroll Lynch, Patti LaBelle and Gabourey Sidibe are going to play in Season 4.

Jessica Lange (German ex-pat, Elsa Mars): Unlike the villainous role in "Coven," Lange is playing a "benevolent soul" in "Freak Show." Elsa, who came to the U.S. after the war, is like a mother to the "freak" circus performers, as she has rescued them from the hospitals and jails, according to Murphy. She has been doing that for nearly 20 years and she loves and takes care of the performers, Murphy said. These performers would have ended in an asylum if Elsa had not rescued them. And, as the performers have nowhere else to go, Elsa does everything possible to keep the show running. Murphy said to EW: "In her way, she relates to them and feels like she's one of them as well."

Sarah Paulson (Dot and Bette Tattler): Sarah is playing the conjoined twins, with two heads. Dot and Bette become the star performers, the main attraction of the freaky circus. People start coming from distant locations to watch the "incredibly odd and special girls," according to Murphy. He also said that the conjoined twins "may or may not be responsible for heinous activities that have gone on in the town."

Michael Chiklis (Wendell dell Toledo): The veteran actor plays the strongman in the upcoming season. He and his current wife in the show, Desiree Dupree, join Elsa's freak show because rest of the freak shows are shutting down and they do not have any other skills. Murphy revealed that Toledo is running from the law because of some disastrous events that he caused.

Evan Peters (Jimmy Darling): Murphy calls Jimmy the "big man on the campus." He acts as the leader of the group but Toledo arrives and challenges his position on the campus. Jimmy and Toledo "begin to battle for power under Elsa," Murphy said to EW.

Angela Bassett (Desiree Dupree): She is the three-breasted woman.

Kathy Bates (Ethel Darling): Ethel, who is the bearded woman, according to Murphy, is Elsa's "right hand woman," kind of a "henchwoman" and "helps run the camp." He also said that Bates' character is "sort of the guardian of the law." In his interview with EW, Murphy also revealed details about Ethel's past. She was circus star in the 20s and 30s and post birth of her baby, she became low in spirits and took to drinking. Murphy said that it is Elsa who rescued Ethel from the miserable, drunkard life and thus she is "indebted" to Elsa and she would do anything for her.

Emma Roberts (Maggie): Maggie, a con artist, is in a romantic relationship with Jimmy. She pretends to be a fortune-teller, with a crystal ball. "She shows up at the camp to help them and it ends up terribly bad," Murphy said to EW.

Denis O'Hare (Stanley): Maggie and Gloria are a team. O'Hare's character is a con-man.

Frances Conroy (Gloria Mott) and Finn Wittrock (Dandy Mott) are the mother and son duo from the wealthy palm-beach society. According to Murphy, Dandy is eager to join the freak show circus, but his mother will do anything to keep him away from the freaky group.

John Carroll Lynch (Twisty the Clown): Murphy said to EW: "Twisty the clown is a murderous clown and he's furious that the freaks have shown up in a town where he the most evil clown of all time has retired and he's out to make their lives a living hell." He also revealed that the Twisty the Clown will be seen wearing a mask to cover his lower side of the face. Murphy warns that if someone sees what he is hiding under the mask, he is going to "faint in terror."

Patti LaBelle: Murphy has confirmed that LaBelle is not going to sing in "American Horror Story-Freak Show." She is playing mother to Gabourey Sidibe's character and a co-worker of France's character. LaBelle's character knows what is happening in the town and does try to stop it.

Gabourey Sidibe: Unlike her witch role in "Coven," Sidibe is playing a New York society girl in the upcoming season. Her character will return to the town to find out why her mother is not answering her phone calls, according to Murphy.

"American Horror Story- Freak Show" is scheduled to premiere this fall on Oct. 08.
